ULFA Pro-Talk Faction Delegation Heads to Delhi for Historic Peace Accord Signing
Guwahati, 27th December: A 14-member delegation from the United Liberation Front of Assam’s (ULFA) pro-talk faction is en route to Delhi to participate in the historic peace accord signing ceremony scheduled for December 29. Notable members of the team include Raju Barua, Sash Chowdhury, Arvind Rajkhowa, Pranati Deka, and Mrinal Hazarika.
The momentous event, set to unfold in New Delhi, signifies a significant step towards resolving longstanding conflicts and fostering peace in the region. Talks that began in 2011 have led to this comprehensive 12-point charter addressing ULFA’s demands, encompassing constitutional and political reforms, protection of indigenous people’s identity and resources, land rights, economic arrangements, measures against illegal migration, and cultural preservation.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will grace the signing ceremony, underscoring the commitment of both central and state governments to secure lasting peace. The accord is expected to include an economic package for Assam and measures to protect indigenous communities.
Termed the ‘mother of all peace deals,’ this accord focuses on development policies benefiting the region. The ULFA’s pro-talk faction, led by figures like Anup Chetia and Sashadhar Choudhury, has actively engaged with Home Ministry officials to finalize agreement details.
As the delegation heads to Delhi, optimism surrounds the peace deal, seen as a breakthrough that could usher in a new era of stability and prosperity, putting an end to decades of insurgency and strife in Assam.
