National Desk, 28th December: On December 28, 2023, the Tamil film industry and Indian politics bid farewell to a significant figure, Vijayakanth, widely known as Captain Vijayakanth. Born Vijayaraj Alagarswami on August 25, 1952, in Madurai, India, he left an indelible mark on both the silver screen and the political arena.

Vijayakanth’s cinematic journey spanned over four decades, featuring roles in 154 movies, where he not only excelled as an actor but also ventured into directing and producing. Regarded as one of the top 20 best Tamil actors of all time by The Cinemaholic, his contributions to the industry were multifaceted.

Beyond entertainment, Vijayakanth made a significant impact in politics, founding the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) political party. He served as an influential Member of the Legislative Assembly in Tamil Nadu, representing Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies. From 2011 to 2016, he held the position of the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
