Delhi Airport Faces Significant Delays Due to Dense Fog Conditions
National Desk, 28th December: As of December 28, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport contends with substantial delays attributed to dense fog conditions. The visibility has plummeted to near-zero levels in several areas, causing disruptions in airport operations. Reports indicate that approximately 134 flights, encompassing both domestic and international arrivals and departures, have experienced delays.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for dense to very dense fog on Thursday and Friday mornings, with a yellow alert for dense to moderate fog anticipated over the weekend. This persistent fog is expected to persist over northwest India in the coming days, potentially leading to further flight delays or diversions.
Delhi Airport, operating with four near-parallel runways, currently utilizes only one runway equipped with a CAT III landing system for low-visibility landings due to the closure of the main runway (28/10) for repairs. This reduction in operational capacity exacerbates flight delays during foggy conditions.
Travelers are advised to stay updated on their flight status using the Live Flight Tracker on the Delhi Airport website or by contacting their respective airlines for real-time updates and changes in flight schedules. Given the airport’s daily handling of 1,400-1,500 flights, passengers should anticipate extended wait times amid the current weather conditions.
To minimize the impact of fog-related delays, passengers are encouraged to arrive well in advance—90 minutes before domestic flights and 3 hours before international flights. Airport authorities may employ measures such as proactive passenger communication and potentially deploy fog-resistant aircraft to mitigate inconveniences.
In summary, dense fog has prompted widespread delays at Delhi Airport, affecting numerous flights and passengers. With continued foggy conditions expected, travelers are advised to stay informed about their flight status and plan accordingly for potential disruptions.
