Renowned Manipur Lyricist Akhu Chingangbam Abducted and Released

Northeast Desk, 29th December: In a distressing incident on December 29, Manipur-based lyricist Akhu Chingangbam was abducted at gunpoint by unidentified gunmen. The assailants, holding his wife and mother at gunpoint, forcibly took him. Known for his impactful contributions to the music scene and social activism, Chingangbam is associated with projects like “A Native Tongue Called Peace,” focusing on fostering peace through music among Manipur’s children.

Fortunately, Chingangbam was released a few hours later. Reports suggest that the abduction was linked to some of his social media comments. Manipur CM Biren Singh confirmed the rescue, stating, “Akhu Chingangbam has been rescued.” S Ibomcha Singh, SP, Imphal East police, mentioned that investigations are currently underway.

Hailing from Khurai in Imphal East, Akhu Chingangbam, a prominent voice in the region, holds a doctorate in Physics and has utilized his platform to advocate for human rights and social issues. This alarming incident occurred against a backdrop of ethnic tensions in Manipur, emphasizing the intricate socio-political challenges faced by the region.
