Manipur CM N. Biren Singh Visits Injured Security Personnel, Addresses Ongoing Security Situation

Northeast Desk, 2nd January: Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh paid a compassionate visit to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Hospital to check on security personnel injured in the line of duty amid efforts to restore peace and order. Addressing the media, CM Biren Singh expressed commitment to countering threats and pressures from terrorist groups, hinting at the involvement of foreign machinery, possibly the Kuki National Army (KNA-B) from the Myanmar side.

The ongoing conflict between the Meitei people of Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo tribal community has resulted in significant casualties, prompting government interventions, curfews, and shoot-at-sight orders. As of September 15, 2023, official figures reported 175 fatalities due to the violence, with substantial military deployments and relocations to safer areas.

The recent attack on commando units and village volunteers on January 1, 2024, left at least five individuals wounded, emphasizing the persistent security challenges. CM Biren Singh’s visit to RIMS Hospital underscores the state’s commitment to the welfare of security forces and ongoing efforts to stabilize the region.

Beyond the human toll, the violence has impacted Manipur’s economy, with a 19% contraction in GST collections from April to October. As the Chief Minister navigates this challenging scenario, the continued engagement with injured personnel and focus on security measures reflect a multifaceted approach to addressing the complex situation.
