Manipur: CM N. Biren Singh Warns of AFSPA Reinstatement Amidst Escalating Violence in state

Northeast Desk, 3rd Jan: In the aftermath of heightened violence in Manipur, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh issued a stern warning that those responsible for such acts will be held accountable if the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) is reinstated. The CM expressed deep distress over recent violent incidents, particularly the Lilong Chingjao area firing that resulted in four villagers being killed. The attack, linked to disputes over illegal drug trade revenue, involved cadres of the Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF), the political wing of the banned People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

During a visit to the injured at Raj Medicity, CM Singh condemned the violence and urged Lilong residents to maintain peace. He emphasized the government’s intolerance for lawlessness and warned that strict measures, including the reimposition of AFSPA, could be taken against those perpetuating violence. Singh’s statements follow a series of violent events, including a gunfight in Moreh town, near the India-Myanmar border.

The CM’s resolve to restore order and seek justice is evident, as the government launches operations to apprehend the culprits. Singh called on the public to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities and unite against internal conflicts, emphasizing the commitment to safeguard Manipur from external threats. The situation remains tense, highlighting the government’s determination to curb violence and maintain law and order in the region.
