Myanmar Sends Back 151 Soldiers Who Sought Refuge in Mizoram After Clashes

Northeast Desk, 3rd Jan: A total of 151 Myanmarese soldiers, who sought refuge in Mizoram after armed clashes with an ethnic insurgent group in their home country, were returned on January 2, 2024.

The soldiers were airlifted by the Myanmar Air Force from Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital.

Having crossed the Indian border and entered southern Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district on December 29, the soldiers sought assistance after their camps near the international borders were overrun by the Arakan Army, an insurgent group.

The Myanmar army personnel, armed and in custody of the Assam Rifles at Tuisentlang, had been held since approaching the para-military force at Parva near the international border.

This incident echoes a similar occurrence in November when 104 Myanmar soldiers fled to Mizoram after their military camps along the Myanmar-India border were overrun by pro-democracy militia. All of them were subsequently sent back.
