Assam: Tiger Census Underway at Manas National Park – 400 Trap Cameras Deployed
Guwahati, 4th Jan: Manas National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its majestic tigers, has become a hotspot for both domestic and international tourists seeking a glimpse of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Currently, the National Park Authority has initiated the annual tiger census using advanced camera trapping technology.
The official tiger counting process commenced on December 24, 2023, and is set to continue until the first week of February 2024, spanning approximately 40 days. The National Park Authority has strategically placed 400 trap cameras across the three ranges of the park – Banhbari, Bhuiyapara, and Panbari – to capture the movements of these elusive big cats.
Notably, last year’s census revealed the presence of over 57 leopards within Manas National Park, as determined by the trap cameras. The National Park Authority remains optimistic that this year’s tiger count will exhibit a significant increase.
Observers note a higher concentration of leopards in the Panbari and Bhuiyanpara ranges compared to the Banhbari range. It’s important to highlight that Manas National Park is home to various species of big cats, including leopards and tigers.
