Assam: Elephant Fatally Struck by Train in Jorhat District

Guwahati, 7th January: Tragedy struck in Assam’s Jorhat district as an elephant lost its life after a collision with a train near Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday night. The unfortunate incident occurred when a herd of wild elephants was crossing the tracks, and one of the pachyderms was hit by the down Vivek Express.

The collision resulted in the elephant being caught under the train’s engine, leading to both the fatality and technical issues for the train. The carcass was later removed from the tracks, allowing the train to resume its journey after addressing the technical problems.

Forest officials have reached the site to conduct a post-mortem examination on the elephant’s carcass, shedding light on the ongoing challenges of wildlife conservation and human-animal conflicts in the region.
