Assam DGP Issues Warning Amidst Rising Tensions; Urges Youth to Avoid Militant Recruitment

Guwahati, January 10: In response to escalating tensions in regions housing the last remaining prohibited insurgent group in Assam, Director General of Police (DGP) G P Singh has issued a stern warning. The advisory, conveyed through print and electronic media, cautions Assam’s youth against falling prey to militant recruitment drives. Additionally, residents in these volatile areas are strongly urged to relocate to safer zones for their well-being, emphasizing safety as the top priority.

Recent developments include the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) reporting a drone attack on its camp in Myanmar. The alleged incident resulted in injuries to two ULFA-I members. The banned organization claims that Indian security forces orchestrated the attack, dropping three bombs, two of which detonated. The third bomb failed to explode. While ULFA-I points fingers at Indian security forces, the Indian Army has not officially responded, and a Guwahati-based army officer mentioned unawareness of the alleged incident.

Given the cross-border nature of the incident, authorities suggest that the Ministry of External Affairs may possess more relevant information. Meanwhile, Assam Police has taken a proactive step by withdrawing security coverage provided to ULFA Chief Paresh Baruah’s residence since 2000, signaling a firm stance against militant activities.
