Assam Govt will give Congress permission to carry out ‘Bharat Nyay Yatra’ in state, says Himanta Biswa Sarma
Guwahati, 12th January: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has confirmed that the state government is ready to grant permission to the Congress for its Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, provided the party seeks approval. However, as of now, there is no information on the Congress formally requesting permission for the Yatra in Assam.
Scheduled to reach Assam on January 18, the Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders, will traverse the state for eight days, covering 17 districts until January 25. Sarma expressed uncertainty about the Congress’ plans, stating that the government lacks information on the proposed route and whether permission has been sought.
During a press conference, Sarma emphasized that the government is unaware of the Yatra details, despite the media being informed. He clarified that the government is prepared to grant permission if the Congress formally seeks it, adding that the BJP will respond politically to the Yatra.
Addressing concerns about denied permissions for using educational institutions, Sarma explained that such permissions cannot be granted when schools and colleges are in session. However, he noted that on Sundays, permissions could be considered.
Regarding the Yatra’s route through Guwahati, Sarma emphasized the need for it to stick to the national highway to avoid traffic disruptions. He specified that if the Yatra must pass through the city, it should conclude before 8 am to minimize traffic impact.
In response to the Congress considering alternative arrangements in farmlands for container stays, Sarma assured that it wouldn’t be an issue, offering to direct district commissioners to prepare suitable locations if needed.
The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, spearheaded by Rahul Gandhi, is set to commence from Imphal on January 14, concluding in Mumbai on March 20.
