Meghalaya CM attends inauguration ceremony of New Raj Bhavan in Tura
Northeast Desk, 12th January: In a momentous occasion for the Garo Hills region, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma virtually attended the inauguration of the Raj Bhavan in Tura. Governor Phagu Chauhan officially opened the building on January 12, emphasizing its significance in fostering inclusiveness and administrative decentralization.
Chief Minister Sangma expressed immense joy and pride in the project’s completion, deeming it a historic moment for Meghalaya and specifically for the Garo Hills region. He thanked Governor Phagu Chauhan for his support, highlighting the Raj Bhavan as a symbol of unity for the state’s diverse population.
The newly inaugurated Raj Bhavan, located in the Danakgre area of Tura town, spans 28.45 acres and was constructed at a cost of Rs. 24.1 crores. Sangma underscored the government’s commitment to decentralization and infrastructural development, emphasizing the Raj Bhavan’s role in fostering inclusiveness beyond the capital region.
Originally conceived in 2009 as an “Assam type” building, the project underwent revisions, transforming into an earthquake-resistant RCC structure. Unforeseen circumstances in 2016 led to cost revisions and delays. Revived in 2021 under Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s leadership, the project expanded with additional work orders totaling Rs. 18.67 crores.
Despite challenges, the Raj Bhavan was completed in three years, with its inauguration marking its official role as a focal point for official events and ceremonies in the Garo Hills region. The event witnessed physical presence and a tour of the campus by dignitaries, including Thomas A Sangma, Hon’ble Speaker, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, and Smti Agatha K Sangma, Member of Parliament, Tura.
Chief Minister Sangma reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening administrative infrastructure across all regions, signifying a promising step towards progress and unity in Meghalaya.
