Myanmar Army Soldiers Enter Mizoram, Seek Refuge Following Border Clash
Northeast Desk, 18th January: Visual evidence has surfaced showing 278 soldiers from the Myanmar Army entering Mizoram, Northeast India, following a clash along the Karma River near the border. Fully armed and equipped, the soldiers crossed into Indian territory in the Bandukba area of Lawngtlai District, Mizoram. They were subsequently escorted to an Assam Rifles camp for overnight stay.
This incident is part of an escalating refugee crisis in Mizoram. Previously, around 4,000 to 5,000 people, including 39 army personnel, sought refuge in Mizoram’s Champhai district after clashes between Myanmar’s ruling junta-backed forces and local militia groups. Among the refugees, 21 were injured, with five in critical condition requiring medical treatment in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram.
The Tyao River, forming part of the international boundary between India and Myanmar, has become a crossing point for those fleeing unrest. Mizoram shares a border with Myanmar, and the situation is complex, with local authorities managing the humanitarian aspects while awaiting direction from national agencies regarding international and security implications.
