Assam Police Seizes 1,770 Bottles of Illegal Cough Syrup in Anti-Drug Operation

Guwahati, 19th January: In a significant crackdown on drug smuggling, Assam police made substantial seizures of illegal cough syrup on January 19.

A total of 1,770 bottles of intoxicants were seized from a vehicle carrying vegetables in Jogighopa, Bongaigaon district.

The operation unfolded when officials stopped a pick-up truck from West Bengal, uncovering the illicit cargo during inspection.

The driver, Hafizur Rahman, was arrested in connection with the seizure.

Acting on specific information, the police initiated a search operation at the interstate border checkpoint, leading to the discovery of the concealed bottles among vegetables destined from Dinhata in West Bengal to Krishna in Assam.

Certain fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs, including Phensedyl, have been banned by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry due to irrational consumption and lack of therapeutic efficacy.

This incident is part of the broader issue where cough syrups are consumed as drugs by youngsters across various parts of the country, sometimes being transported from neighbouring countries.

State authorities are taking strict action against drug transportation, aiming to curb the abuse of narcotics within the state.

The seizures not only prevent the distribution of these illegal substances but also send a strong message to those involved in the drug trade about the consequences of their actions.
