Manipur: COCOMI Urges National Focus on Security Adviser’s Warning About Kuki Militants in state

Northeast Desk, 19th January: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a prominent socio-cultural organization in Manipur, has called for national attention to Security Adviser Kuldiep Singh’s concerns about the escalating involvement of Kuki militants across the state.

In response to Singh’s comments on the matter, COCOMI urged the national media to spotlight this specific aspect of Kuldiep Singh’s statement. The committee emphasized the importance of recognizing these factors, particularly the potential engagement of foreign mercenaries and Kuki militants in suspension of operations with the Government of India, as crucial in understanding the root causes of Manipur’s ongoing crisis.

During a press briefing on January 18 at the CM Secretariat, Kuldiep Singh expressed serious concerns about the active role of Kuki militants in targeting civilians and security forces in Manipur. Singh highlighted a recent incident in the Bishnupur area where Kuki militants attacked three workers near Naga village, leaving them seriously injured. Despite heightened activities, security forces are on high alert, and efforts are underway to address the situation.

Singh’s comments followed an attack on January 18, where five civilians were killed by unknown armed miscreants in two separate incidents in Manipur. Four farmers, including a father and son, were shot dead in Ningthoukhong Kha Khunou under Bishnupur district, and another person lost his life during a gunfight at Kangchup in Kangpokpi district.

Singh assured that security forces are actively engaged in combing operations to address the heightened activities in and around the hills and Moreh. The government is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of civilians and security personnel, aiming to bring the situation under control in the next few days.
