Assam DGP Denies Attacks on Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, Refutes Congress Claims

Guwahati, 20th January: Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh vehemently refuted allegations made by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, who asserted that vehicles and posters associated with Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra were targeted by goons in Lakhimpur district.

Addressing the claims on social media platform X, DGP GP Singh tagged Kharge’s earlier post and stated unequivocally that there has been no targeting of any vehicles, specifically those of the Yatra or any political party. He highlighted the elaborate security arrangements made by Assam Police for the Yatra throughout the state.

In response to Kharge’s accusations of attacks on vehicles and posters in Lakhimpur district, DGP GP Singh reassured, “Dear Sir, There has been no targeting of any vehicle of any political party, less so of the Yatra. @assampolice has made elaborate arrangements for security and L&O for the Yatra throughout the state. The Yatra has peacefully entered Arunachal Pradesh after first leg in Assam,” said the Assam DGP.

Mallikarjun Kharge had previously condemned the alleged attacks, stating, “We strongly condemn the shameful attack on the #BharatJodoNyayYatra vehicles and tearing of Congress party’s banners and posters by BJP goons in Lakhimpur, Assam.”

Kharge expressed concern over what he perceived as attempts by the BJP government to undermine constitutional rights and justice. He asserted that the Congress Party would not be intimidated by such tactics and declared, “Congress Party will not be cowed down by this tactic of attack and intimidation employed by the BJP Government in Assam, which is responsible for this.”

Kharge also announced the Congress party’s intention to take appropriate legal action against what he referred to as ‘BJP stooges.’ The party had alleged on January 20 that banners and posters welcoming the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ to North Lakhimpur town had been vandalized by miscreants.

The ongoing Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi, entered its third day in Assam, passing through various parts of Lakhimpur district, including the headquarters town North Lakhimpur, before proceeding to Arunachal Pradesh. The Congress party shared a video purporting to show miscreants tearing down posters with Congress leaders’ photos in North Lakhimpur town on January 19.
