Nitish Kumar Resigns as Bihar Chief Minister, Eyes Alliance with BJP
National Desk, 28th January: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Raj Bhawan and submitted his resignation letter at 11 am. The Janata Dal (United) leader is set to stake claim to form a new government with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Announcing his resignation at the JD(U)’s legislative meeting, Nitish Kumar received unanimous support from all JD(U) MLAs. The veteran politician is expected to join the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nearly two years after leaving the alliance. Kumar will meet the Bihar Governor to seek support for forming a new government with BJP’s backing.
The BJP legislators in Bihar held a meeting to strategize their approach, anticipating a legislative meeting with JD(U). Meanwhile, RJD, a Mahagathbandhan ally, conducted a meeting where Lalu Prasad Yadav was given the authority to make decisions for future developments.
Amidst the political turmoil, Congress appointed Bhupesh Baghel as the party’s senior observer in Bihar. The BJP demands two Deputy Chief Ministers and the Bihar Assembly Speaker’s position in the potential alliance.
JD(U) spokesperson KC Tyagi stated that the Mahagathbandhan alliance government is on the brink of collapse. Despite being the single largest party in the Bihar assembly, RJD falls eight members short of the majority if JD(U) departs. Nitish Kumar’s move signals a significant political realignment in Bihar.
