Assam Tea Industry Seeks Government Support for Overseas Promotion
Guwahati, 29th January: Nalin Khemani, Chairman of Bharatiya Chai Parishad, emphasized the need for promoting the ailing tea industry in Assam, especially in overseas markets. Khemani urged the commerce ministry to focus on improving exports and implementing a tea promotion policy through the Tea Board. With oversupply in the domestic market and tepid export demand, he highlighted the importance of tapping new international markets to boost the industry.
As the Union interim budget approaches, Khemani urged the government to consider reducing the social cost burden on the industry in Assam. Stressing the need for a sustainable model, he suggested that the government take over the social cost burden, especially related to garden hospitals. Khemani believes this step would benefit both tea garden management and workers, ensuring access to quality medical facilities.
The Indian tea industry, facing challenges such as rising production costs, stagnant consumption, and climate change impacts, seeks support to maintain its global competitiveness. The industry, a significant contributor to India’s economy, grapples with declining revenue and operating profitability, making government initiatives crucial for its revival and growth.
