ULFA-I questions Assam Police of Inaction Against Manash Chaliha; Spy Controversy Continues

Guwahati, 1st February: The banned militant group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) released a letter on February 1, expressing concerns over Assam Police’s lack of action against Manash Chaliha. The letter referenced Chaliha’s alleged serious allegations and insulting remarks against the ULFA (I) chief during a recent Facebook live session. ULFA-I emphasized that neither their chief nor any member had contacted Chaliha. The outfit questioned why Assam Police hadn’t taken action against Chaliha’s use of a “Government of Assam” number plate on his private vehicle and his alleged possession of arms. This follows ULFA-I’s release of a confessional video involving Manash Borgohain, accused of spying and implicating Chaliha’s involvement.

In the confessional video, ULFA-I announced the arrest of Mukut Axom (Manash Borgohain) for breaching the outfit’s Constitution. Mukut Axom confessed that he was sent by Assam state authorities to spy on ULFA-I, revealing his work with the Special Branch of Assam Police since 2021. The video stirred controversy, with Mukut Axom detailing his mission to monitor ULFA-I’s activities and expressing how he gained the organization’s trust. Manash Chaliha, who denied any involvement, faced anxiety and insecurity after ULFA-I released the video, refuting the allegations and emphasizing his innocence.

Chaliha spoke to the media on January 31, stating that he had no knowledge of Manas Borgohain, asserting he had no contact with him. He provided details of his work history since 2012, indicating that he had worked in various multinational companies. Chaliha refuted claims of being affiliated with SB or RAW, emphasizing that he had been working outside Assam and was planning to venture into business. The controversy intensified as ULFA-I’s accusations against Chaliha led to threats and concerns for his safety. Chaliha addressed allegations related to a car in the video, explaining its sale in 2022 and notifying MD Motors about the change in ownership.

As the controversy unfolds, Assam Police’s role and ULFA-I’s accusations against Chaliha continue to be under scrutiny, contributing to a complex situation with potential implications for various stakeholders.
