Guwahati’s Nehru Stadium Set for FIFA Olympic Upgrade; Rs 831 Crore Allocated
Guwahati, 2nd February: In a significant announcement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled plans to transform Guwahati’s Nehru Stadium into a FIFA Olympic-level football ground, with an estimated cost of Rs 831 crore. This ambitious project, to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 4, aims to create the largest sports complex in eastern India.
CM Sarma expressed his vision, stating, “We want to upgrade the Nehru Stadium to the standard of a FIFA Olympic football ground. This will be the biggest sports complex in entire eastern India. All the offices of the sports associations of Assam will be there.”
Highlighting the regional significance, Sarma deliberately emphasized “eastern India” rather than just the Northeast. He envisions the complex surpassing facilities in Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
The proposed sports complex, a testament to Assam’s commitment to sports infrastructure, will feature a main football ground and a trial football field. Additionally, it will house offices for various sports associations within the state.
In conjunction with this, CM Sarma also revealed plans for a multi-facility sports complex in Chandrapur, dedicated to hosting the National Games. “For the purpose of holding National Games, there will be a multi-facility sports complex in Chandrapur. The Prime Minister will be laying the foundation stone for that,” he stated.
These developments are part of a broader initiative, with PM Modi set to lay the foundation stones for projects exceeding Rs 11,000 crore during his visit to Assam on February 4. The rejuvenation of Nehru Stadium and the establishment of state-of-the-art sports complexes underscore Assam’s commitment to fostering athletic talent and promoting a culture of sports in the region.
