FIR Filed Against TBSE President Dr Dhananjay Ganchowdhury Over Kokborok Language Script Controversy
Northeast Desk, 3rd February: An FIR has been lodged against Dr Dhananjay Ganchowdhury, President of Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE), for allegedly discriminating against and violating the rights of indigenous students. The complaint, filed by John Debbarma, Vice President of Twipra Student’s Federation, accuses Dr Ganchowdhury of attempting to force students to answer the Kokborok language subject in Bengali script for the upcoming board exams.
In the FIR, John stated that the TBSE guidelines do not specify which script should be used for Kokborok, and thus, students should not be compelled to write in a particular script. He mentioned that Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha clarified that students were not instructed to write the Kokborok language answer exclusively in Bengali script. The complaint highlighted that a request for question papers in both Roman and Bengali scripts was submitted to the TBSE Secretary by the Twipra Student’s Federation.
John emphasized that the majority of students prefer the Roman script, and the TBSE should not impose what students do not want. Referring to reports from Script Selection Committees in 1991 and the Tripura Upajati Bhasha Commission in 2005, which favored the Roman script, the complaint urged action against Dr Dhananjay Ganchowdhury for alleged discrimination and violation of students’ fundamental rights.
