Assam CM Denies Misuse of State Funds for Election Campaigns
Guwahati, 3rd February: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has refuted allegations regarding the misuse of state government funds for election campaigns. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) issued a clarification stating that no expenses related to Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s election campaigns have been borne by the state exchequer.
The CMO addressed allegations from a national news media portal, which claimed that the Assam chief minister utilized state government funds amounting to crores of rupees for BJP’s campaign, both within and outside the state. The official CMO statement emphasized that all expenses, including flights, are paid for by the political party through bank transfers or cheques.
The statement further clarified that when the Chief Minister visits any district for official engagements, there might be coincidental social functions like condolence meetings or weddings. However, such instances are infrequent compared to the numerous official visits undertaken by the Chief Minister since May 2021. The CMO criticized the media portal for making sweeping conjectures based on incidental social programs attended by the Chief Minister, calling it a malicious attempt to spread disinformation.
The clarification aims to ensure transparency and accountability, dismissing any misconceptions about the use of state resources for personal political campaigns in the administration led by Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
