Mizoram: NIA Disrupts Cross-Border Smuggling Network; Accused Arrested

Northeast Desk, 4th February: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has successfully dismantled a cross-border smuggling network involved in trafficking arms, ammunition, and explosives. The key accused, identified as Lalngaihawma from Mizoram’s Mamit area, was apprehended in Aizawl on February 1. The arrest followed intelligence on the operations of a well-organized, large-scale illegal arms supply network operating in several Northeastern states.

Lalngaihawma, along with collaborators, engaged in trafficking arms and explosives not only within Northeastern states but also across borders, collaborating with various operatives, including insurgent groups beyond the international border. The conspiracy involved distributing these weapons to individuals in India and abroad. These illicit arms and explosives are suspected to have been used in terrorist acts and criminal activities.

NIA registered the case on December 26, 2023, under relevant sections of the IPC, UA (P) Act 1967, Explosive Substances Act 1908, and Arms Act. Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the entire network.
