Assam: 17 cyber criminals arrested in overnight raids in Morigaon

Guwahati, 7th February: In a targeted operation against cybercrime, law enforcement authorities in Morigaon conducted overnight raids resulting in the arrest of 17 individuals, revealed Superintendent of Police Samiran Baishya. The arrests come on the heels of a comprehensive cybercrime investigation aimed at curbing illegal activities that preyed on unsuspecting victims.

The identities of the apprehended cyber criminals remain undisclosed, but their alleged involvement in a fraudulent scheme has come to light. Authorities suspect their role in acquiring loans under false pretenses, utilizing fake documents and impersonating foreigners to carry out their illicit activities.

During the raids, law enforcement officials seized a substantial amount of incriminating evidence from the detained individuals. Among the confiscated items were 33 PAN cards, passbooks from various banks, 66 ATM cards, 44 SIM cards, 39 mobile handsets, 33 voter cards, three laptops, one iPad, a chequebook containing 33 cheques, and a significant sum of Rs 1 lakh 15 thousand in cash.

The intricate nature of this cybercrime operation has raised concerns regarding the sophistication of such illicit activities and their potential ramifications on individuals and financial institutions alike. Superintendent Samiran Baishya’s proactive approach underscores the pressing need for vigilant measures to combat the growing threat posed by cybercriminals.
