Assam: Man killed by mortar explosion in Sukanjuli firing range near Indo-Bhutan border

Guwahati, 8th February: A 32-year-old man was killed in an explosion at the Sukanjuli firing range on the Indo-Bhutan border under Assam’s Tamulpur district on February 8.

The incident unfolded during an armed training session conducted by the Indian Army, which involved the participation of the Punjab Regiment and G.R. Tan Madras Regiment.

The victim, identified as Khempo Narzary, hailed from Hartola village under the jurisdiction of the Darangamela police station.

Reports indicate that Narzary ventured into the firing range and began collecting remnants of bomb gunpowder scattered across the area.

Tragically, the explosion occurred when he attempted to break apart an 81 mortar bomb.

Local authorities immediately responded to the scene upon receiving the distressing news, recovering Narzary’s body and arranging for a thorough autopsy to ascertain the cause of death.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the border area, highlighting the inherent dangers associated with military training exercises and underscoring the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent such tragic accidents in the future.
