Manipur: Meetei Council in state Urges Diligent Survey for Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing

Northeast Desk, 9th February: In a significant development concerning border security, the Meetei Council, Moreh (MCM), in Manipur has expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their decision to fence the India-Myanmar border. However, the council has emphasized the need for a meticulous survey of the land before commencing construction.

Leishangthem Brojendro Meitei, the general secretary of MCM, stressed the importance of safeguarding Manipur’s territory during the fencing process. The council insists on conducting a proper and detailed survey to ensure that no portion of the state’s land is compromised.

In a press release, MCM highlighted the benefits of the proposed fence, including curbing cross-border smuggling of drugs and arms, preventing illegal entry of Myanmar nationals into India, and reducing the movement of anti-social elements between the two countries. The council views the fencing as a crucial measure to address the current crisis in Manipur caused by the influx of illegal Myanmar nationals.

With Manipur sharing approximately 398 kilometers of the 1,643-kilometer Indo-Myanmar border, the importance of securing this porous boundary cannot be overstated. The MCM’s call for expediting the fencing process aligns with the central government’s commitment to bolstering national security through fortified borders.

As the central government moves forward with its border security initiatives, including the fencing of the Indo-Myanmar border, the emphasis on conducting a thorough survey reflects a proactive approach to address potential challenges and ensure the protection of Manipur’s territorial integrity.
