Purported Assam Police Sub-Inspector Reveals Corruption Links
Guwahati, 9th February: Alleged Assam Police Sub-Inspector, Manash Borgohain, held captive at a camp of banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I), disclosed details about Assam Police officer Manas Chaliha’s involvement in corruption and blackmail.
Borgohain, allegedly held captive by ULFA-I, provided insights into his purported involvement in illicit activities during his tenure with the police force.
He alleged witnessing and participating in various unlawful activities within the Assam Police’s special branch, specifically naming Manas Chaliha. Borgohain accused Chaliha of blackmailing and recruiting girls for covert operations, exploiting vulnerable individuals as spies equipped with spy cameras.
The purported Sub-Inspector confessed to facilitating illegal transportation of betel nuts and contraband, receiving instructions from higher-ups like police officers Partha Sarathi Mahanta, involved in orchestrating illegal goods movement. Borgohain detailed instances of vehicles passing checkpoints after hefty bribes, while others faced seizure for non-compliance.
Furthermore, Borgohain implicated senior officials in illegal coal trade and other illicit businesses, alleging corruption across sectors, including rice distribution and foreign cigarette sales. He claimed individuals like Chaliha operated large-scale enterprises colluding with influential figures.
Operating under the alias “Montu,” Borgohain asserted compliance with police department directives, including misrepresenting his origin as Dibrugarh, implicating high-ranking officials in alleged misconduct.
