20-year-old Youth Arrested Over Hit-and-Run Case in Guwahati

Guwahati, 9th February: In a disturbing incident highlighting the misuse of power and privilege, Basistha Police in Guwahati apprehended a 20-year-old youth, son of a public servant, in connection with a hit-and-run case resulting in the death of one person. The tragic incident occurred on January 26, when the accused, driving a speeding vehicle, struck a middle-aged man, identified as Narabahdur Thapa, killing him instantly.

According to a police statement released on Friday, the victim, aged 54, succumbed to his injuries on the spot after being left unattended on the road. The accident occurred around 8:30 pm on national highway-27 at the Nalapara sub-locality under Basistha Police Station in Guwahati. The unidentified vehicle responsible for the accident fled the scene.

Following the incident, a case numbered 62/24 was registered under sections 279/304 (A) for negligent and rash driving at Basistha Police Station. Initially, there were reports suggesting the involvement of a police vehicle, based on witness statements. However, further investigation by the police shed light on alarming details indicating a potential abuse of power.

“During the investigation, it has come to light that the suspected vehicle was fitted with Red/Green lights similar to those used in police vehicles and was also equipped with siren-like equipment. As a result, the police were unsure whether it was a police vehicle or a private vehicle fitted with such equipment,” read the statement from Basistha Police.
