Students of NIT Sikkim Stage Protest Over Grievances

Northeast Desk, 13th February: Students of Sikkim NIT initiated a dharna last night, protesting various issues that have plagued the institute. Despite the chilling night, the students continued their protest until 1 am, highlighting concerns such as mental torture, nepotism, and favoritism.

The protest aimed to draw attention to the alleged curbing of fundamental rights, including instances of physical assault and a lack of recourse for dissent. One student took to social media, describing the distressing situation faced by students, likening their treatment to that of inmates rather than learners.

Within the college, students claim an atmosphere rife with monopoly, favoritism, and nepotism, leading to both mental and physical assaults by faculty and staff. Moreover, the absence of a student union exacerbates grievances, as any form of protest is met with punitive measures, stifling dissent.

The quality of education suffers due to reportedly unqualified faculty members, and basic facilities, particularly hostel conditions, are subpar. Allegedly, students were coerced into signing affidavits upon admission, prohibiting them from protesting or seeking external support.

Despite efforts to address these grievances, students assert that their complaints have been overlooked by the institute’s director. They appeal for immediate intervention to address these serious allegations and ensure the protection of their rights and welfare at NIT Sikkim.
