Weightlifter Popy Hazarika Foresees Khelo India 2023 Boosting Assam’s Sporting Culture

Sports Desk, 13th February: Seasoned weightlifter Popy Hazarika, a prominent figure in Indian sports who represented the country at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, expressed her optimism about the Khelo India University Games 2023, emphasizing its significance for aspiring athletes across 200 universities participating in the event, set to commence on February 19.

Popy, a decorated athlete with multiple medals at the National Games and Commonwealth championships, believes that hosting such a prestigious event in Assam for the first time will significantly enhance the sporting culture in the state.

Acknowledging Assam’s reputation for warmth and hospitality, Popy welcomed athletes to experience the vibrant spirit of the Northeast and expressed confidence in the state government’s efforts to ensure the event’s success.

Having overcome numerous challenges in her personal journey, including being raised by a widowed mother who worked tirelessly to support her family, Popy understands the transformative power of sports in shaping individual lives.

Reflecting on her own experiences, Popy emphasized the immense value of participating in events like the Khelo India University Games, which provide invaluable exposure and opportunities for young athletes to thrive on a national platform.

For Popy, a native of Namti Salkathoni village in Sivasagar district, hosting the KIUG in Assam is a testament to the state’s growing prominence in the field of sports, supported by significant improvements in sports infrastructure and government initiatives to promote athletics.

Popy lauded the Assam government’s unwavering support for athletes, particularly its decision to provide job opportunities to medalists of major national tournaments, a move that has bolstered the sporting culture across the state.
