Assam: 305 quintals of poppy cultivation destroyed by state police in Barpeta

Guwahati, 13th February: In a significant development in the fight against drugs, police in Assam’s Barpeta district have achieved a major breakthrough by destroying 305 quintals of poppy cultivation and 82,080 poppy plants during a raid.

The illegal poppy cultivation was found concealed amidst corn cultivation on a plot of land measuring over one bigha at Bhatnapaity Char under Kachumara Police Station.

Led by the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Barpeta and Executive Magistrate, a team of Barpeta Police conducted the operation on February 13, 2024, in accordance with the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985.

A case has been registered, and investigations are underway.

In another significant success in the battle against narcotics, the Railway police in Bongaigaon intercepted and seized 29 kg of marijuana from the Humsafar Express at New Bongaigaon railway station.

During a raid conducted on Humsafar Express number 12504, the Assam Railway Police discovered a substantial quantity of marijuana concealed inside a bag.

Subsequently, the railway police detained five individuals identified as Meghan Paswan, Ramen Debbarma, Iti Debbarma, Dharmendra Paswan, and Mohammad Mustakim.

All the detainees have been taken into railway police custody for further investigation into the incident.
