Guwahati, 13th February: Women and Child Development Minister Ajanta Neog informed the state Assembly on Tuesday that more than 3,700 children had gone missing in Assam over the last three years, with over 3,400 of them successfully rescued by various agencies.
Neog stated that rescued children are reunited with their families whenever possible, while those unable to provide details of their homes are cared for by the government.
Responding to a query by Congress MLA Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah, Neog disclosed that a total of 3,779 children were reported missing from 2021 to 2023, with 3,419 of them eventually being rescued.
Children who could provide information about their families were returned to them, while those unable to do so were accommodated in childcare institutions, Neog explained.
Furthermore, the minister highlighted that from 2012 to 2023, a total of 6,054 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, were registered in Assam, with 3,522 cases being disposed of.
Neog also noted that cases of child trafficking are prevalent across almost all districts of the state, with Kamrup, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, and Biswanath recording the highest number of such incidents.
