Nagaland CM Urges Collective Effort to Improve Education Quality
Northeast Desk, 15th February: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio underscored the need for collective action to address the “gradual deterioration” in the quality of education despite the appointment of highly qualified teachers in government schools. Speaking at a function held at a recently upgraded high school in Meriema, on the outskirts of Kohima, Rio emphasized the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders in the education sector.
Despite Nagaland’s impressive literacy rate of nearly 80 percent, Rio lamented the challenges faced by Naga youths in securing employment due to the absence of skill-based education. He called attention to the imperative for enhancing the quality of education to equip students with the necessary skills for employment opportunities.
Highlighting the concerning trend of diminishing educational standards in government schools, Rio attributed this phenomenon to a “collective failure” and urged officials from the school education department and other stakeholders to unite efforts towards revitalizing the education sector in the state.
Rio urged for concerted efforts to restore government schools to their former prominence, emphasizing the pivotal role of collaboration in achieving this goal. Additionally, he disclosed plans for the “rationalization” of teachers in government schools, intending to transfer surplus teachers to schools with fewer staff and to close schools with negligible enrolment.
In this regard, Rio solicited support from village councils and leaders to facilitate the rationalization process, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in shaping the future of education in Nagaland. Through collective action and strategic initiatives, Rio aims to revitalize the education system and ensure a brighter future for Nagaland’s youth.
