Meghalaya Cabinet Approves Increase in Secretarial Assistance for Retired Judges

Northeast Desk, 15th February: The Meghalaya Cabinet has greenlit a proposal to augment the secretarial assistance provided to retired judges, aimed at enhancing the welfare of former judicial officers. While the precise details of the increase remain undisclosed, the decision reflects the government’s commitment to supporting retired judges.

The approval entails amendments to the Retired Judges Secretarial Assistance and Domestic Help Rules, 2013, last amended in 2016. Responding to requests from the judiciary, the amendments seek to elevate the financial support provided to retired judges and chief justices, including secretarial assistance and other financial aid.

Moreover, the cabinet has sanctioned the extension of allowances recommended by the Second National Judicial Pay Commission (SNJPC), mandated by the Supreme Court. This directive aims to align the benefits offered to judicial magistrates and officers in Meghalaya with national standards.

In a separate development, the cabinet has given the green light to the Meghalaya State Investment Promotion & Facilitation Bill (MSIPF), 2024. This legislation paves the way for the establishment of the Investment Meghalaya Authority, replacing the existing Single Window Agency in the state.

Recognizing the need for enhancements and modifications to the prevailing Single Window Agency, the new bill envisages a unified system for streamlined applications through portals involving various departments. Additionally, a tracking mechanism for all investments and proposals will be instituted, alongside the categorization of investments based on proposal amounts.

The initiatives underscore the government’s proactive stance in bolstering judicial welfare and streamlining investment processes, fostering a conducive environment for retired judges and investors alike.
