Assam: Golaghat District Congress President Expelled Following Controversial Meeting with Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati, 17th February: In a significant political upheaval, Dadu Taye, the Golaghat District Congress Committee (DCC) president, has been ousted from his position after a rendezvous with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The expulsion, effective immediately, was decreed by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in response to the contentious meeting, which transpired in Golaghat on February 15.

Taye, taken aback by the abrupt action, contends that his allegiance to Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi spans over 15 years, insisting his encounter with the chief minister was for personal reasons.

The controversy erupted when Taye publicly honored Chief Minister Sarma with a traditional gamosa at an event in Golaghat, a gesture that swiftly went viral and purportedly triggered his removal from the party. This gesture didn’t sit well with the APCC hierarchy, prompting a swift issuance of a show-cause notice to Taye.

The notice, demanding a response within 72 hours, queried Taye’s rationale for not informing the party leadership about his meeting with the Chief Minister, particularly amid speculations of BJP’s attempts to sow discord within the Congress ranks by poaching its members.

Citing the severity of the situation, the notice underscored recent attacks on APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah during Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, allegedly orchestrated by the Chief Minister. Taye was criticized for not considering these circumstances before his clandestine meeting, which occurred “in the dead of night.”

In a swift move, Golap Saikia was appointed as the interim president of the Golaghat DCC, effectively replacing Dadu Taye.

Taye retaliated during a press conference on February 16, accusing Kaliabar MP Gaurav Gogoi of orchestrating his suspension and casting aspersions on Gogoi’s lineage, alleging his bloodline has been tainted.

The episode unfolded amidst rumors of Gogoi potentially contesting from the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat instead of Kaziranga, a move allegedly backed by Congress leader Rockybul Hussain, sparking tensions within the party.

Taye’s expulsion and subsequent outburst underscore a critical juncture for the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee as it grapples with internal strife and navigates its political trajectory amidst a charged political landscape.
