Meghalaya needs 11.5 % annual GDP growth to become 10 billion USD economy by 2028: CM Conrad Sangma
Northeast Desl, 18th February: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has unveiled an ambitious plan for the state, targeting an annual GDP growth rate of 11.5% to propel Meghalaya into a 10 billion USD economy by 2028. With the current state economy standing at Rs 45,000 crore, Sangma emphasized the necessity for significant enhancement.
During the foundation laying ceremony for the Rs 100 crore Bulk Water Supply Project in Tura, Sangma outlined the roadmap to achieve this economic milestone. The Bulk Water Supply Project, backed by the Ministry of DoNER under NESIDS, aims to provide water to 41 villages while enhancing water supply to Tura town.
Sangma underscored the government’s vision, channeling investments into improved infrastructure, job creation through entrepreneurship, and policies aimed at doubling farmers’ income. The focus remains on bolstering the rural economy by leveraging the state’s abundant natural resources.
Acknowledging past hurdles, Sangma lauded the progress made by the MDA 2.0 government in tackling various challenges. Meghalaya’s recognition as the ‘best performer’ in implementing central government schemes underscores the success of initiatives like PMGSY, PMAY, JJM, and MGNREGS.
Highlighting the commitment to water supply issues, Sangma noted a significant budget increase for the PHE department, rising from less than Rs 50 crore to Rs 3000 crore. He discussed the State Water Policy and flagship schemes addressing climate change concerns.
With the launch of MegARISE in Tura, Sangma emphasized its focus on safeguarding critical catchment areas in East Khasi Hills and West Garo Hills. Implemented in partnership with the German Development Bank (KfW), the project aims to benefit 106 villages across 39 micro-watersheds, with a total financial outlay of Rs 344 crore over seven years, managed by the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA).
