Assam: ULFA-I Revokes Death Sentence for Alleged State Police Spy Manash Borgohain

Guwahati, 19th February: In a press release issued on February 19, the armed militant organization United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I) announced the revocation of the death sentence imposed on alleged Assam Police spy Manash Borgohain.

ULFA-I stated that Manash Borgohain, a Sub-Inspector of the Special Branch of Assam Police, had been serving since 2021. The organization accused high-ranking police officers, including Director General of Police GP Singh and Deputy Inspector General Partha Sarathi Mahanta, of direct involvement in Borgohain’s alleged espionage activities. According to ULFA-I’s statement, Borgohain and several other indigenous youths were trained for the operation from June last year at specific locations in Guwahati.

Following a trial held on February 13, 2024, under the chairmanship of the President of the Lower Council, Borgohain pleaded guilty to the charges. ULFA-I emphasized the seriousness of the accused’s actions, stating that they demonstrated a desire for wealth and power, along with treasonous offenses against the organization.

As a consequence, ULFA-I has disqualified Manash Borgohain from the organization’s membership for five years. Additionally, he has been sentenced to one year of physical labor and four years of self-correction through positive work culture. Despite the sentence, Borgohain will still retain all constitutional privileges of revolutionary fighters. A high-powered Monitoring and Review Committee comprising three Senior Commission Officers will oversee the implementation of the sentence, with adherence to the Code of Conduct being mandatory during the period.

ULFA-I concluded by stating that the organization would not be liable for any adverse consequences if Borgohain failed to utilize this opportunity for positive change.
