Assam CM Acknowledges Diverse Views on CAA Implementation
Guwahati, 2nd March: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing concerns regarding the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state, emphasized the need to respect differing perspectives on the issue. He highlighted that while he supports CAA, it is essential to accommodate the views of those who oppose it, urging for a balanced approach.
In a media statement, Sarma stated, “I support CAA. But at the same time, many people in Assam oppose it. We have to accommodate both points of view. We should not criticise anyone for supporting or criticizing CAA. Those who are opposing CAA should go to the Supreme Court, instead of disturbing peace and tranquillity in Assam.”
Meanwhile, All Assam Students Union (AASU) and 30 other organizations have jointly announced a series of statewide agitational programs starting from March 4 to protest against the implementation of CAA in the state. The program includes a bike rally in every district on March 4th.
Speaking at a press conference, AASU’s chief advisor, Samujjal Bhattacharya, reiterated the organization’s stance on opposing illegal immigration and protecting the indigenous people of the state. He warned both the state and central governments against compromising the future of indigenous communities.
Bhattacharya highlighted that CAA was passed in the Rajya Sabha based on votes, and protests against it continue across the Northeast. He emphasized that the people of the region strongly reject CAA, leading to ongoing protests and legal battles.
