Assam: BJP Corrects Election Listing Errors in state After Delimitation
Guwahati, 3rd March: Following a significant error in their election listing, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a revised list with the correct names of constituencies and candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Assam. This revision comes after the BJP initially announced its first list of candidates on March 2, apparently overlooking the recent delimitation exercise in the state.
In the initial listing, the BJP mistakenly identified Karimganj as a Scheduled Caste (SC) constituency, whereas Silchar holds this designation. Furthermore, Mangaldai constituency has been replaced by Darrang-Udalguri, Tezpur is now referred to as Sonitpur, and Kaliabor has been renamed Kaziranga.
The Assam BJP party has not yet commented on these inaccuracies, but the revised list reflects efforts to align with the updated constituency names and designations mandated by the delimitation exercise.
In August 2023, the Election Commission of India (ECI) published the final delimitation order for the Assembly & Parliamentary Constituencies of the State of Assam, based on the 2001 Census figures. This process, conducted after extensive consultations with stakeholders, ensures that all constituencies adhere to constitutional provisions outlined in Article 170 and Article 82.
The delimitation exercise resulted in the allocation of 126 seats in the Legislative Assembly and 14 seats in the Lok Sabha for the State of Assam, reflecting the population data from the 2001 Census as published by the Census Commissioner.
