Assam’s Cricketer Uma Chetry Joins UP Warriorz in Women’s Premier League
Guwahati, 6th March: Uma Chetry, a prominent women’s cricketer from Assam, is all set to join the UP Warriorz in the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024. This opportunity arises as she steps in to replace Vrinda Dinesh, who unfortunately sustained a shoulder injury during Match 6 against the Mumbai Indians on February 28 and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
The UP Warriorz secured Uma Chetry’s services for a sum of Rs 10 lakhs, which was her reserve price. Uma has showcased her prowess in recent matches, representing India A against England A and contributing to the successful India A Emerging squad that clinched the ACC Emerging Women’s Asia Cup 2023.
Hailing from Bokakhat, Uma Chetry has already etched her name in history as the first cricketer from Assam, irrespective of gender, to earn selection for the Indian national team. Among her notable achievements is winning a gold medal at the Asian Games while representing the senior Indian women’s team. A pivotal moment in her career occurred on July 2, 2023, when she received the call-up to join the senior women’s national team on their tour of Bangladesh, featuring in both T20 and ODI matches.
Uma’s inclusion in the UP Warriorz team marks her as the second cricketer from Assam to partake in the WPL, following in the footsteps of all-rounder Jintimani Kalita, who has been associated with the Mumbai Indians for the past two seasons. As Uma embarks on this new chapter, cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate her performance in the remainder of the WPL.
