PM Modi Inaugurates Barauni-Guwahati Natural Gas Pipeline
Guwahati, 9th March: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Barauni-Guwahati Natural Gas Pipeline (BGPL), a milestone project linking the North East region to the National Gas Grid.
Addressing a gathering in Assam’s Jorhat, Modi emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “With today’s dedication, Assam’s refining capacity has doubled and that of Numaligarh alone has tripled, this is a result of the priority we have placed in developing North East’s energy sector.”
The strategic project aims to enhance the availability of natural gas in the northeastern part of India, thereby boosting the region’s overall development.
The 718km pipeline, traversing through Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam, has been built at a cost of Rs 3,992 crore by GAIL, a Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Designed to supply natural gas to nine geographical areas covering 31 districts across these three states, the pipeline will be managed through authorized city gas distribution (CGD) entities along its route.
In addition to inaugurating the BGPL, Prime Minister Modi also initiated several other projects valued at ₹18,000 crore from Meleng Meteli Pothar in Jorhat. These include the inauguration of Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital, a Child Care Unit at B. Baruah Cancer Institute in Guwahati, and two crude oil pumping stations of Oil India Limited.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister virtually laid the foundation stone for various projects, including Sivasagar Medical College and Hospital, Guwahati, Digboi Refinery expansion projects, and IOCL’s Bethkuchi Terminal in Guwahati.
