89th Anniversary Celebration Marks Landmark Achievement in Assamese Film Industry

Guwahati, 10th March: Today, film enthusiasts in Assam and nationwide unite to commemorate a significant milestone – the 89th anniversary of the Assamese film industry. This noteworthy occasion holds a special significance for cinema lovers, particularly in Assam, as it signifies the release of the inaugural Assamese movie, ‘Joymoti,’ in 1935.

Directed and produced by the esteemed Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, ‘Joymoti’ occupies a distinguished position in Indian cinema history. Not only was it the first Assamese film but also the fourth Indian talkie, marking a groundbreaking achievement in the cinematic landscape 89 years ago.

The narrative of ‘Joymoti’ revolves around the 17th-century Ahom princess, Soti Joymoti, drawing inspiration from the play “Soti Joymoti” by Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaruah. Aideu Handique, the first Assamese female actor, portrayed the lead role alongside the renowned stage actor and playwright Phani Sarma.

Produced between 1933 and 1935, ‘Joymoti’ debuted under the banner of Chitralekha Movietone in 1935, heralding the birth of Assamese cinema. Remarkably, the film introduced dubbing and re-recording technology to Indian cinema, setting a precedent for the industry.

Jyotiprasad Agarwala, a versatile talent, not only helmed the film but also lent his voice to the character of Laluksola Borphukan. This marked a significant leap forward in Indian cinema, showcasing the filmmaker’s versatility.

Beyond its technical innovations, ‘Joymoti’ also etched its place in history as the first Indian film to explore “realism” and political themes, offering audiences a distinct cinematic experience.

As festivities unfold today, cinema aficionados contemplate the enduring legacy of ‘Joymoti’ and the visionary contributions of Jyotiprasad Agarwala, highlighting the vibrant tapestry of Assamese cinema that has flourished for nearly nine decades.
