Assam Breaks Record with 1010 Deaf and Mute Individuals Performing State Anthem

Guwahati, 10th March: In a momentous occasion, 1010 deaf and mute individuals set a new record by performing the Assam State Anthem, “O Mur Apunar Dexh.” The event, organized by Touch of Humanity-Lets Be Human (NGO), garnered recognition from the Assam Book of Records, marking a significant milestone in promoting sign language awareness.

TANMI, a collaborative effort involving Touch of Humanity-Lets Be Human (NGO), Assam Association of Deaf, NERIM Group of Institutions, and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment Govt of Assam, orchestrated this historic performance. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the importance of learning sign language and advocating for the rights of the Deaf and mute community.

Held at NERIM Group of Institution, Jayanagar, Khanapara, Guwahati on Monday, August 14, 2023, the event coincided with the 4th Anniversary cum Foundation Day of the NGO. Organizer Hirak Jyoti Borah expressed gratitude for the support received from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Govt. of Assam Pijush Hazarika, and various organizations.

Borah emphasized the event’s purpose, stating its goal of promoting sign language and securing the rights of the Deaf and mute community. He highlighted plans to advocate for the introduction of ‘Assamese Sign Language’ and the ‘Assamese Dictionary of Sign Language,’ as well as establishing a university dedicated to the higher education of deaf and mute students.

The Assam Book of Records (ABR) commended this remarkable achievement, underscoring its commitment to showcasing hidden talent and protecting endangered folklore in Assam and the Northeast. The event not only set a record but also propelled a broader vision for the empowerment and inclusion of the deaf and mute community in Assam.
