Guwahati’s Panbazar Flyover Closed for Reconstruction, Traffic Rerouted

Guwahati, 10th March: Commuters in Guwahati are bracing for disruptions as the old Panbazar Flyover shuts down for vehicular movement from March 9 onwards. The closure mandates the rerouting of traffic, with travelers directed to use an alternate flyover previously designated for one-way traffic heading towards Vishal and Paltan Bazar. This flyover will now accommodate two-way traffic until the completion of the new structure.

According to Railway sources, the construction of the new flyover is projected to span nine months, prompting the closure for the specified duration. The decision to demolish the 58-year-old flyover and replace it with a taller bridge was announced in February by the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR).

The move stems from the need to adhere to Indian Railway Schedule of Dimensions guidelines, which mandate a minimum distance of 6.25 meters between the track and the flyover. The outdated Pan Bazar flyover falls short of this requirement, with a height of 4.61 meters, necessitating the construction of a new structure.

Moreover, the Indian Railways grapples with operational challenges due to insufficient vertical and horizontal clearance of the old Panbazar Flyover. This has led to a permanent speed restriction of 15 kmph, impacting the efficiency of train movement in the region.

The closure signifies a crucial step in addressing safety and operational concerns, aligning with the broader objective of modernizing transportation infrastructure in the city. Commuters are advised to plan alternative routes during this period, with the Railways assuring swift completion to minimize inconvenience.
