Manipur: Mission Olympic Cell Approves Training Proposal for Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu

Northeast Desk, 11th March: During its 126th meeting, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) greenlit weightlifter Mirabai Chanu’s proposal to undergo training at LA FERTE-MILON, Paris, in preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games.

Mirabai Chanu, who secured a Silver Medal at the Tokyo Olympics, will commence her training stint in La Ferte-Milon, Paris, approximately a month prior to her Olympic event. The early departure aims to help her acclimate to weather conditions and fine-tune her skills for the imminent mega event.

Accompanied by two coaches and a physiotherapist, Mirabai will undergo training in Paris, with expenses covered under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) funding. This encompasses airfare, visa costs, accommodation charges, food, training costs, local transport, medical insurance, and sauna charges.

Mirabai Chanu isn’t the sole beneficiary of the MOC’s approval. Equestrian player Anush Agarwalla’s proposal for participation in eight competitions and procurement of equipment for his horses received approval. Similarly, financial assistance approvals were granted to Judoka Asmita Dey and shooter Arjun Singh Cheema for their international engagements.

Newly emerged Indian Tennis sensation Sumit Nagal’s request for financial aid for participation in two international tournaments, along with support staff expenses, was also sanctioned by the MOC. Under the TOPS funding, their airfare, accommodation costs, coaching fees, and support staff fees will be covered.

Furthermore, the MOC extended support towards enhancing the performance of other athletes. Badminton players Chirag and Satwik will benefit from financial assistance for hiring a Video Analyst, while weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga’s physiotherapist contract extension and track athlete Amoj Jacob’s equipment procurement were also facilitated.
