Supreme Court Sets Hearing Date for Pleas Against Election Commissioners Act

National Desk, 15th March: The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for March 21 to address pleas challenging the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Act, 2023.

This act, which removed the Chief Justice of India from the selection panel for Election Commissioners, has faced criticism and legal challenges.

Additionally, the Court has allowed petitioners to submit applications regarding the recent appointment of two new Election Commissioners under the 2023 law. These applications will also be reviewed on the same date.

Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu has exercised powers conferred by section 4 of the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service, and Term of Office) Act, 2023 (Act No. 49 of 2023).

The President has appointed Shri Gyanesh Kumar, IAS (Retd.), and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, IAS (Retd.), as Election Commissioners in the Election Commission of India. Their appointments will take effect from the date they assume charge of their office, as indicated in the official notification.
