Assam MP Abdul Khaleque Steps Down from primary membership of Congress ahead of Lok Sabha polls
Guwahati, 15th March: Two days ahead of the conclusion of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, the Congress party faced a setback in Assam as the current Member of Parliament from the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency, Abdul Khaleque, resigned due to dissatisfaction with the party.
Notably, Khaleque’s resignation came after the Congress party denied him the Lok Sabha ticket for the upcoming elections and instead fielded Deep Bayan, the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Sevadal, from the Barpeta constituency.
Khaleque’s departure from the party is seen as a response to the Congress party’s decision not to give him the ticket for Barpeta. Sources indicate that Khaleque voiced concerns about the neglect of the Muslim community in Assam by the Congress party, prompting his decision to resign.
In a letter addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Khaleque expressed his deep respect for the party’s history and heritage, citing his attraction to its ideologies during his time in the media. However, he lamented the party’s recent approach in Assam, stating that people-centric issues have taken a back seat.
Khaleque emphasized the importance of democracy and the need for independence and self-respect among the people. He criticized the attitude and approach of the party’s state President and AICC General Secretary in-charge, accusing them of damaging the party’s prospects in Assam.
Consequently, Khaleque tendered his resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress (INC) with immediate effect, signaling his departure from the party he once served with dedication and commitment.
