Kerala Government Moves Supreme Court to Halt Citizenship Amendment Act Implementation
National Desk, 16th March: The Kerala government has taken a decisive step by approaching the Supreme Court to seek a stay on the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, and Citizenship Amendment Rules, 2024.
The Central Government’s move to implement the rules on March 11, officially enforcing the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), has stirred fresh debates, especially with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Citizenship grants under the CAA have already commenced, prompting concerns and renewed scrutiny of the Act.
Passed by Parliament on December 11, 2019, the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) triggered widespread protests across the nation. Notably, demonstrations in Delhi, particularly in areas like Jamia Milia Islamia and Shaheen Bagh, persisted for months, reflecting the public’s discontent with the legislation.
The enactment of the CAA not only fueled nationwide protests but also exacerbated communal tensions, leading to violent riots in Northeast Delhi in early 2020. The unfortunate events resulted in significant loss of life and left hundreds injured, underscoring the contentious nature of the legislation.
