Meghalaya: Indian Forest Service Association Demands CBI Probe into Chief Conservator’s Death

Northeast Desk, 18th March: The Indian Forest Service Association (IFSA) has petitioned the Meghalaya Chief Secretary, urging a thorough investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the demise of the state’s chief conservator of forests, N Luikham, who allegedly died by suicide at his residence.

In a letter addressed to Meghalaya Chief Secretary Donland Phillips Wahlang, the IFSA Secretary-General, Suneesh Buxy, highlighted one of the purported reasons behind Luikham’s tragic demise: allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by a government officer in Meghalaya.

Buxy asserted that Luikham had endured significant mental anguish and distress due to these unfounded allegations, allegedly supported by influential figures in the state’s mining sector. However, no substantial evidence was reportedly found against Luikham in the investigation.

Expressing grave concerns over the circumstances surrounding Luikham’s death, Buxy emphasized the need for a comprehensive and impartial investigation by the CBI. The IFSA called for stringent action against any individuals found culpable of abetment or negligence, aiming to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Describing Luikham as an exemplary officer renowned for his integrity and moral rectitude, the IFSA mourned his untimely demise, lamenting the loss to the conservation efforts of natural resources.

The IFSA’s plea underscores the urgency and importance of uncovering the truth behind Luikham’s death and ensuring accountability for any wrongful acts, thereby upholding justice and integrity within the forest services sector.
