“Heeding Their Requests…” Assam MP Abdul Khaleque withdraws resignation from Congress
Guwahati, 20th March: Abdul Khaleque, the Barpeta MP, has retracted his resignation from the Congress party following discussions with senior leaders Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. Expressing his unwavering loyalty to the party, Khaleque stated, “I am withdrawing my resignation. I was in Congress, I still am, and will continue to remain in the party.”
Khaleque’s decision to rescind his resignation came after consultations with prominent Congress leaders, including KC Venugopal and Sonia Gandhi. Emphasizing his trust in the party’s ideals, he clarified that his earlier concerns were addressed during the discussions with Sonia Gandhi, leading to his decision to remain with the Congress.
During his meeting with Sonia Gandhi, Khaleque voiced his reservations about certain issues within the party but refrained from commenting on the possibility of rejoining the Congress. Additionally, he confirmed that he would not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections independently.
Khaleque’s withdrawal of resignation comes amid speculations sparked by his meeting with KC Venugopal on Tuesday, hinting at a possible reconciliation with the party.

In his previous statement following the announcement of resignation, Khaleque had raised concerns about representation for Muslim communities within the Congress party. Stressing the importance of adequate Muslim representation in Assam, he advocated for allocating seats to Muslim candidates based on the state’s demographic composition.
Khaleque’s decision to remain with the Congress underscores the party’s efforts to address internal challenges and maintain unity ahead of crucial elections.
